Maxwell Skoulding was born on 22nd January 1882 in Melton, Suffolk. He was the eldest son of Alfred and Sarah. Conscripted into the services in March 1916, Maxwell was called up on 10th April 1917. On 23rd June 1917, he was married to Jessie Mason at St Andrew’s Church, Melton.
Maxwell was deemed not fit enough to serve overseas and instead joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. His first posting came in July 1917 when he was sent to Blackpool and where he stayed until 2nd April 1918. After this point, he was transferred back to Suffolk to work as a porter at the Military Hospital in Ranelagh Road, Ipswich.
On 17th July 1919, Maxwell was discharged from the army and returned to Melton to carry on the family business. As he did not serve overseas, Maxwell was not entitled to receive any medals.
