The Skoulding family had a business in Melton dating from at least 1839, when William Skoulding was recorded in Robson’s Commercial Directory as being a grocer and tea dealer. William’s son Alfred continued the family business into the twentieth century. The Skoulding family continued to run a shop in the village until the 1990s, closing after some one hundred and fifty years of trading.

Alfred William Skoulding married Sarah Matilda Barnaby in 1875 and they started their married life in Melton working for the family grocery business. The couple had three children; Alberta Clara, who died shortly after her birth in 1876, followed by Maxwell and Alfred Cecil. Both sons were to serve during the First World War.
