The Scogings Family

Henry Scogings and Elizabeth Alice Brett were married in Martlesham on 21st December 1881. Their first home together was 9 Kingston Terrace, on Brewers Lane in Woodbridge. It was here that their four children were born; Henry in 1882, Frank in 1889, Laura Agnes Blanche in 1890 and George John in 1892. Henry Sr. died in 1893 leaving Elizabeth to bring up their children on her own. Three years later, in 1896, she married John Crosby and the new family moved to The Street in Melton.

By 1911, only George was living at home at 29 The Street; Henry had married and moved to Bawdsey, Frank was at St Paul’s Theological College in Burgh, Lincolnshire, and by 1914, he’d become a curate in Salisbury, Rhodesia [Zimbabwe], and Laura was in service in Chislehurst, Kent. Both Henry and George were to serve during the Great War with only Henry returning.

John Crosby died in 1916, a few months after George had been killed, and is buried at Melton Old Church. Their mother, Elizabeth died in 1936.
