The Gaffney Family

Henry Gaffney was the Clerk and Steward of St Audry's Hospital
during the war.

Henry Gaffney and Charlotte French were married on 11th July 1892 at St Mary’s Church, Leicester. After their marriage, they moved to Menston in Yorkshire where Henry was the assistant clerk at High Royds Hospital, just outside the village. It was here, in Menston, that their first child, Harry, was born in 1893.

By 1901, the family had moved to The Beeches in Melton as Henry was now employed as the clerk and steward of St Audry’s Hospital, a position he was to hold until his retirement. In 1903, their second child, Phyllis Vera, was born and ten-year-old Harry was at school at Framlingham College.

After Henry’s retirement, they moved to Cornerways on Melton Road where he died on 22nd January 1925. In 1939, Charlotte was living at St Andrew’s on Melton Road with her married daughter Phyllis and her grandson Christopher.

The family then moved back to Menston in Yorkshire where Charlotte died in 1955 aged eighty-nine.
