The fifth son of Emma and Elijah, Robert, was born in Melton on 23rd March 1898 and baptised in St Andrew’s Church on 24th July that year. In 1911, he was still at school attending Melton Council School.
Robert enlisted in the 4th (Territorial) Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, around 1915 – before reaching the age of 18. It is not known when he was posted overseas but, in 1918, he was with the 4th Suffolk Regiment when they were converted to a Pioneer Battalion and attached to the 511th Field Company of the Royal Engineers.
For his war service, he received the British War and Victory Medals.
Robert married Elsie Overett in Woodbridge in 1933. Six years later, the family was living at 20a Cumberland Street, Woodbridge. Robert’s occupation was shown as being a market gardener and a special constable. He died in 1980.
