Frederick Robert Cousins and Mary Maria Kiddle were married in Hadleigh, Suffolk in 1886. Their first child, George Kentwell Cousins, was born on 15th November 1890 in Ipswich. The 1891 census, taken in April, shows the family as working in Dover for George Barton, a colonel in the infantry. However, by the end of the year, the family had moved to Melton where George was baptised in St Andrews Church on 22nd November 1891. Frederick had been employed as James Burness' butler at his home, The Lodge.
The Cousins were living in Beech Grove Cottage on New Road, Melton, when their second son, Frederick Jr, was born on 27th September 1893. He was baptised in St Andrew’s Church, Melton, on 17th December that year. Frederick Sr remained as butler to the Burness family until 1916 when he became the landlord of the Old Mariner’s Arms in New Street, Woodbridge.
