John Pemberton Cone and Emily Winifred Howe were married in the Woodbridge registration district in 1891. Emily gave birth to their first surviving child, Charles Henry, in 1895 and then his brother, Stanley Walter, on 10th July 1897; both boys were baptised at St John’s Church, Woodbridge. In 1901, the family lived on Melton Road and John worked as a carpenter. Emily died in 1907, leaving John to bring up their two sons.
In 1911, the family was living on Daines Lane, off the Melton Road, and sixteen-year-old Charles was working as a hurdle maker’s assistant. His brother, Walter, was still at school. Both sons served during the war, but only Stanley returned. John Pemberton Cone remarried in 1912 to Ada Palmer but was left a widower once again when she died in 1935. John continued to live in the same house where he had brought up his family until his death in 1946.
