The Chandler Family

George Chandler and Betsie Ann Cracknell were married in Wilby, Suffolk, in 1890. Soon after, they were living at 4 Prospect Place in Melton, from where George worked as a bricklayer. Betsie returned to Wilby later that year and again in May 1895 to give birth to their sons, William Percy (known as Percy) and Harold. A third son, Edward Martin, was born in 1902 but died the following year.

By 1911 George was running his own building company from Lime Kiln Quay, Woodbridge, and Percy was working for him as a carpenter while Harold was a solicitor’s clerk. By 1914 the family had moved across the Melton Road to Pine View, a house that had been built by George. Both Percy and Harold enlisted into the services, but Percy did not return.

George Chandler's brother, Harry, also lived in Melton and served during the war. Click on their names below to find out more.
